Nicholson Named Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Honorable Mention

NM State wideout Tony Nicholson hauled in two touchdowns and eclipsed 100 receiving yards for the first time in his career in the Aggies’ 41-28 win against UIW last weekend.

TYLER, Texas – Graduate student wide receiver Tony Nicholson has earned honorable-mention recognition for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award following his two-touchdown performance against UIW last weekend. The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Player of the Week and Honorable Mention List was released Tuesday by the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce and SPORTyler.

Nicholson recorded six catches for a career-high 101 yards and two receiving touchdowns in the Aggies' 41-28 victory over the Cardinals Saturday inside Aggie Memorial Stadium. The native of Grand Prairie, Texas, eclipsed 100 receiving yards for the first time in his career and matched a personal best with his two receiving scores in the contest.

His first touchdown of the day came off a 34-yard pass from redshirt sophomore quarterback Josh Adkins, giving the Aggies an early 7-0 lead. He found pay dirt once again less than three minutes later, hauling in a 42-yard pass from Adkins to put the Aggies up by two scores in the first quarter.

Saturday marked Nicholson's second multi-touchdown game of the year, with his first coming on the road against in-state rival New Mexico. He accounted for 61 yards and two touchdowns with a team-leading seven receptions in the contest.

Nicholson leads the Aggies in every receiving category this season, maintaining team highs in total receptions (55), receiving yards (610), yards per reception (11.09), receiving yards per game (61.0) and touchdowns (5).

His five receiving touchdowns are the most in a single season for an Aggie wide receiver since NFL draftee and current Baltimore Raven Jaleel Scott logged nine touchdowns during the 2017 campaign.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.

In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas high school and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four year college.

Nicholson and the NM State football team play their final home game of the season this weekend. The Aggies clash with rival UTEP on Senior Day at 2 p.m. (MT) Saturday, Nov. 23, inside Aggie Memorial Stadium.

Tickets can be purchased at the Pan American Center or by calling 833-AGGIEUP.
