LYNCHBURG, Va. - Senior running back
Jason Huntley went out in style.
The Aggie halfback finished his collegiate career with another 100-yard rushing performance, running for 105 yards Saturday in NM State's 44-29 season-finale loss at Liberty. With the effort, Huntley became the 12th Aggie since 1954 to rush for 1,000 yards in a season.
The Arlington, Texas, native totaled 100-plus rushing yards for the third game in a row and the fifth time this season. He finishes his career at NM State with 2,182 rushing yards, the seventh-most total in program history.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Behind first-half touchdowns from redshirt senior running back
Christian Gibson and redshirt junior wideout
Andre Bodison, the Aggies trailed by just six points entering the break. It was all Liberty from there, though.
The Flames scored one back-to-back possessions to begin the second half, opening a 15-point lead with just over eight minutes left to play in the third quarter. After redshirt sophomore quarterback
Josh Adkins and junior wide receiver
Robert Downs III connected for a 27-yard touchdown, Liberty tacked on 14 unanswered points, extending its lead to 49-21 with 5:46 remaining in the game.
After Gibson blocked a Liberty punt to give NM State possession deep in the Flames' territory, Adkins hit graduate student
Tony Nicholson with a three-yard pass in the end zone on the Aggies' final offensive play of the game - and season. The touchdown came with a minute left to play and cut the score to 49-28, which would stand after Liberty recovered an onside kick to seal the game.
NOTABLES
Adkins threw for 173 yards and three touchdowns on 18-of-35 passing. Bodison, Downs III and Nicholson were each on the receiving ends of Adkins' touchdown tosses.
Nicholson made a team-high four catches for 30 yards and touchdown. Downs III hauled in three passes for a team-leading 66 yards and one score.
Redshirt senior linebacker
Javahn Fergurson once again led the way defensively. He logged double-digit tackles (11) for the ninth time this season, tallying 2.0 of the Aggies' seven tackles for loss.Â
Senior defensive back
Shamad Lomax finished with two pass breakups. He closed out his collegiate career with at least one pass breakup in four consecutive games.
