@NMStateSoftball Battles UTEP on the Road

The Aggies face the Miners in a doubleheader on Tuesday.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State softball team travels to the Lone Star State to face UTEP on Tuesday, March 19. First pitch from the doubleheader is set for 5 p.m. MT from the Helen of Troy Softball Complex.

HORTON HITS A BOOM

Kelsey Horton's 452 total bases is the new the career record for New Mexico State softball. Her eight bases against Lehigh put her over the top, passing Hoku Nohara, US Bank NM State Athletics Hall of Famer, as the leader in the category.

The senior continues to climb in the career record books for other categories. The slugger sits in second for home runs (62) while also ranking third for runs scored (178), RBI (187), and sacrifice flies (10). She also sits in fourth for hits (224) and doubles (40).

LAST TIME OUT

The Aggies went 1-4 at the ASU Invitational with the lone victory coming in the tournament finale against Lehigh. Against the Mountain Hawks, Kayla Bowen and Horton each recorded a pair of home runs in the victory. Kayla Green picked up the win, pitching 1.2 innings in relief.

SCOUTING THE MINERS

UTEP comes into the contest at 7-19 on the season and a 2-4 record in Conference USA play. The Miners' pitchers post an 8.02 ERA for the season and the squad is batting .280 with a .457 slugging percentage.

In the first meeting between the teams, New Mexico State came out on top, crushing the Miners 12-3 in just five innings. Samaria Diaz got the win when she went 3.1 innings with five strikeouts. Offensively, Kennedy Johnson went 2-for-2 with an RBI single, scoring the first run of the contest.

COMING UP: HOSTING THE HAWKS

Following the midweek doubleheader at UTEP, the Aggies welcome North Dakota for a three-game series. NM State begins the weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 23, beginning at 4 p.m. The series finale on Sunday is set for 4 p.m.
