LUBBOCK, Texas – The New Mexico State track and field team completed the first day of competition at the Fearless Champion Open on Friday. The Aggie throws group posted a strong showing in the javelin and the hammer throw at Fuller Track and Field.
Taniya Mitchell took home second in the hammer throw when she posted a march of 54.03m (177-3) in the event.
Emily Hernandez (49.69m; 163-0) and
Yemisi Oroyinyin (49.27m; 161-7) claimed fifth and sixth place, respectively. The throw by Hernandez was also a new personal best.
Bristol O'Connor placed eighth when she threw 47.77m (156-8) on her final attempt and
Alyssa Watkins followed closely behind in ninth when she posted a mark of 47.17m (154-9). Rounding out the Aggie squad was
Kylie Pollard, who finished in 14
th with a mark of 42.51 (139-5)
Andi Harrelson was the top finisher for NM State in the javelin. The junior threw 40.95m (134-4) on her first attempt to take fourth in the event.
Alyssa Covarrubia placed fifth when she recorded a mark of 36.49m (119-8).
The team closes out the two-day meet on Saturday. Events begin with the women's discus, long jump, high jump and 3,000m steeplechase beginning at noon. Fans can follow along with the live results courtesy of
