@NMStateMTEN Concludes WAC Play with Win Over Seattle U

The NM State men’s tennis team finished conference play with a 5-2 win over Seattle U Saturday night.

SEATTLE – The New Mexico State men's tennis team wrapped up Western Athletic Conference play on a balmy Saturday night at the Amy Yee Tennis Center under the lights with a 5-2 victory over host Seattle U.

The Aggies made quick work of the Redhawks in doubles action with Nicolas Buitrago and Luis Flores winning their match on court No. 3 by score of 6-1. Playing at the No. 2 spot for a chance, Stijn de Haan and Mauri Benitez clinched the doubles point for NM State (14-9, 4-1 WAC) with a 6-2 win over Alex Chen and Emilio Monroy.

Freshman Martin Simecek made it a 2-0 advantage for the Aggies with a 6-4, 6-1 win on court No. 3 against Chen. Benitez then gave New Mexico State a 3-0 edge with a 6-2, 7-5 ousting of his opponent on court No. 5.

Seattle U (4-11, 0-4 WAC) picked up its first point of the night when de Haan was bested in three sets to Colton Wheeldreyer 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Louis Menard, NM State's leader in singles wins, clinched the match for the Aggies not to long after with a 6-2, 7-6 defeat of Arshak Ghazaryan at the No. 2 slot.

Monroy gave the Redhawks their second and final point of the night with a win on court No. 4 over Asmar before Buitrago completed 5-2 victory over SU in a tiebreaker 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 (11-9).

NM State will now return home for a few days before heading off to Browsnville, Texas, for the WAC Tournament (April 26-28) hosted by UT Rio Grande Valley as the No. 2 seed.
