TYLER, Texas – New Mexico State redshirt sophomore quarterback
Josh Adkins has earned honorable-mention recognition for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award following his historic six-touchdown effort against in-state rival New Mexico last weekend. The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Player of the Week and Honorable Mention List was released Tuesday by the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce and SPORTyler.
Adkins, the Spring Branch, Texas, native, accounted for six total touchdowns in the Aggies' 55-52 loss to New Mexico Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M.. He completed 30-of-47 passes for 335 yards and threw for three touchdowns, linking up with graduate transfer wideout
Tony Nicholson twice and senior halfback
Jason Huntley once.
He also gashed the Lobos on the ground, rushing for a career-high three touchdowns. Adkins scored the Aggies' opening touchdown on a three-yard run before picking up his second rushing score of the day on a one-yard plunge in the second quarter.
He found pay dirt for the third time in the fourth quarter, scrambling four yards for his final rushing touchdown of the game.
With his six-touchdown performance, Adkins became the first Aggie to rush for three touchdowns in a game since running back
Christian Gibson, who did so at Louisiana in 2018. Adkins is also the first NM State quarterback to rush for at least two scores since
Tyler Rogers ran for two touchdowns at Kentucky in 2016.
Adkins is one of only three FBS quarterbacks, along with Iowa State's Brock Purdy and Oklahoma's Jalen Hurts, to throw for three touchdowns and rush for three touchdowns in a game this season.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.
In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four year college.
Adkins and the NM State football team are home for their next two contests. The homestand begins against Fresno State at 6 p.m. (MT) Saturday, Sept. 28, inside Aggie Memorial Stadium. Single-game and season tickets for the Aggies' remaining home slate can be purchased at the Pan American Center or by calling 833-AGGIEUP.
