Catching Up with Cedric Wilcots II

NMStateSports.com connected with the former Aggie defensive end and current NFL Draft hopeful to talk about his future and fondest memories of his time in Las Cruces.

Adam Young chatted with Cedric Wilcots II about his preparation for the NFL Draft, how COVID-19 has impacted his training and his best memories at NM State. The Aggie defensive end finished his collegiate career with 19.5 sacks, which ranks fourth in school history.

Fans can listen to the interview here.

AY: How are things as you continue to prep for the NFL Draft during these tough times?

CW: Everything's going smooth. I'm just trying to work around the virus and use stuff I have around the house to keep my body right. I'm staying positive during these tough times.

AY: Are you trying to get creative in how you train for the Draft because you don't have access to a gym?

CW: It's all back to the basics. Sit-ups, push-ups, speed ladder and using what I have around the house. I'm making the most of my resources, and it's all good. It'll all work out in the end.

AY: You participated in the NM State Pro Day less than a month ago. How did things go for you and your teammates?

CW: Everything went great. It was a good opportunity for me and the guys to showcase what we can do in front of all of the scouts. I think it all came together perfectly, and it was great to be back in Las Cruces one more time.

AY: From the end of the season until now, what areas are you really trying to improve in as you get ready for the Draft?

CW: I'm really focusing on getting my body and mind ready to go through a 16-game season instead of a 12-game season like in college. You have to make sure your body is at its peak and always ready to perform.

AY: Has playing in the NFL always been a dream of yours?

CW: Since I was about six-years old. This was always part of the plan, and I'm just happy it's all starting to come together.

AY: I remember in one of the final press conferences of last season, you talked a lot about your maturity and how much you grew off the field as an Aggie. Can you expand on that?

CW: Coming in as a young guy, I didn't know much. I was 17. I was new to the area and new to being on my own. The city and people of Las Cruces took me in under their wings and helped mature me into a young man.

AY: You had an outstanding career on the field, finishing with 19.5 sacks. Did you leave your time at NM State with no regrets?

CW: No regrets at all. I'm grateful to be a part of Aggie history as one of the top sack leaders, but nothing trumps [winning] the [2017 NOVA Home Loans] Arizona Bowl. It was amazing to see the whole city come out. That's something you can't put a price on.

AY: Is the Arizona Bowl at the top of your list of favorite moments as an Aggie? What are some other moments you can think of?

CW: That's at the very top. Nothing touches that, but another moment was recording 3.5 sacks against Idaho as a sophomore. It was amazing to fly around with all my guys, and it's a game that sticks out to me.

AY: Lastly, where do you feel the program is right now as you depart? How excited are you about the future of the Aggies?

CW: The program's on the rise. It has a lot of talent with [defensive lineman] Roy Lopez and [linebacker] Rashie Hodge Jr. I hope I left a mark on the program and that those guys can take the next steps to become better players, become better leaders and show the young guys the way.
