LAS CRUCES, N.M. - A historic stretch of days for the New Mexico State baseball program continues.
Infielders
Nick Gonzales and
Tristan Peterson were named Academic All-Americans by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday, becoming the fourth and fifth student-athletes in Aggie history to claim the honor.
Rex Gates (1970, 1971), Chris Fanning (1990) and David Licini (2002) are the only other NM State baseball student-athletes to be named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans.
Gonzales, whose selection by the Pittsburgh Pirates (No. 7 overall) in the first round of last night's MLB Draft made him the highest pick in school history, was named to the second team. A 2019 Academic All-WAC honoree, he maintained a 3.33 GPA in the classroom while turning heads with his play on the field this past season.
Peterson, meanwhile, earned a spot on the first team. Also a 2019 Academic All-WAC honoree, the Tucson, Ariz., native held a perfect 4.0 GPA in the classroom.
The duo has racked up a bevy of both on- and off-field awards all year long. In May, Gonzales and Peterson became just the second and third Aggies in program history to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition.Â
