LAST TIME OUT | NM STATE 62, at GRAND CANYON 70 | Friday, Jan. 29, 2021
• NM State came out like gangbusters and went on a 13-4 run through the first 4:01 of its first WAC contest of the season, but the Aggies shot just 2-of-25 from three-point range the rest of the way and only 5-of-27 from the field in the second half in a 70-62 setback at Grand Canyon Friday night.
• During that run, the Aggies started 3-of-3 from long range with Wilfried Likayi hitting a pair and Evan Gilyard II adding another.
• Grand Canyon made its last six field goals of the first half and carried a 37-30 lead into the locker room at the break.
• The Aggies stayed within striking distance for the majority of the night thanks to their ability to get to the free throw line. NM State put in 25 of its 33 tries from that distance, helping to offset its shooting woes.
• Coming back after suffering respective foot injuries in early December were senior guard Clayton Henry and junior guard Jabari Rice. The latter finished with 12 points in 29 minutes while the former played 32 minutes and put in five points.
• Coming in at a distinct size disadvantage didn't deter the Aggies from owning an edge on the glass. NM State finished with a 35-28 advantage in the rebounding department against the Lopes with three players grabbig six or more.
Johnny McCants netted a game-high 15 points for the Aggies who saw their eight-game winning streak against GCU come to an end.
• NM State's loss also signified its first WAC setback since January 3, 2019. Prior to Friday night, the Aggies had won their last 31 regular season WAC games as well as their last 34 games against WAC opposition.

COMING UP NEXT
• The Aggies return to the border land for another pair of WAC showdowns next week. NM State's next two-game WAC set pits the Aggies against California Baptist with game one of the series set for 7:00 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 5) night.
