DENVER – NM State women's golf junior Amelia McKee has been named WAC Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Thursday.
A junior from Spring, Texas, McKee fired a three-round score of -6 (210) to finish second. After opening the tournament with a round of 71, McKee made a moving day charge, firing a round of 69 (-3) to vault into third place heading into Wednesday's third and final round.
"Amelia went on a pretty good run towards the turn that allowed her to get back into the tournament," head coach Danny Bowen said. "That run gave her a chance at the individual title and helped our team score. It was fun to see her play with the fire and passion that she did today. That's what we look for her to do the rest of the season. You're always a little more fired up to play at home, but if we can get her to play like that the rest of the season we'll be in good shape," Bowen added.
On Wednesday, McKee shook off an early double bogey, and got scorching hot. McKee recorded three birdies and an eagle from holes seven through 11 to finish her third and final round in 70.
McKee and the Aggies return to action on Monday at the Dale McNamara Invitational hosted by Tulsa at the Golf Club of Oklahoma.
The two-day 54 hole tournament begins Monday at 8:30 a.m. with round, and continues Monday with round two. The third and final round begins on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
