Rath Names Brian Korn Throws Coach for NM State Track & Field

| By:

Korn comes to Las Cruces following four-year stint at Eastern Michigan

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The final piece of the coaching staff for the NM State women's indoor and outdoor track & field teams is in place as head coach Joseph Rath announced the addition of Brian Korn as the program's throws coach Tuesday morning.

"Coach Korn has shown a clear ability to develop throwers just looking at the marks of his athletes over the years," Rath stated. "He has developed walk-ons into national qualifiers and has guided athletes to tons of school records at his coaching stops. Brian has a holistic approach to student-athlete development that resonates perfectly with our staff and team. We are incredibly excited he is with us."

For the past four years, Korn called Ypsilanti, Mich., home and served as an assistant coach on Eastern Michigan's men's track & field teams. Through the course of his four seasons on staff with the Eagles, Korn transformed a platoon of mostly walk-ons into one of the best throwing groups in the region.

"I want to thank coach Rath for the opportunity to be an Aggie," commented Korn. "I am excited to work with Joe and Tony. Together I believe we will continue the great success NM State has had on and off the track."

Korn oversaw the development of 11 NCAA regional qualifiers as well as four qualifiers for the NCAA Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 2021. During his stint, Eastern Michigan produced a pair of All-American throwers, the top-ranked freshman thrower among all NCAA institutions (2019-20) and gathered up bunches of medals at the MAC indoor and outdoor track & field championships.

Before his four-year run in Michigan, Korn was on staff as an assistant coach for the track & field programs at Jacksonville State from 2014-17. Korn mentored his student-athletes to a total of 20 school records while also laying the groundwork for the Gamecocks to produce 23 conference medalists.

The start of Korn's coaching career came at NCAA Division II institution Southwest Baptist where he was installed as the program's track & field strength coach from 2012-14. Under Korn's watch, Southwest Baptist produced school records in eight throwing events while also sending one individual to the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships.

"As a southern Arizona native and with his wife from New Mexico, this is a homecoming of sorts for them," concluded Rath. "We've had him on our short list for a while to hire, and we feel lucky it's a great fit here for his family. "
