Trio of Sixth-Place Finishes Highlight Day One at CUSA Championships

LYNCHBURG, Va. – After a whirlwind regular season, the Aggies returned to action one final time on Friday afternoon, with day one of the CUSA Indoor Track & Field Championship, hosted by Liberty University. Through one day of competition with few point-scoring finals, the Aggies preside in a tie for sixth, with 11 points.
 
The Aggies were led by three sixth-place results, including Maggie Gibbs in the 5000m run, Miranda Tcheutchoua in the weight throw and the distance medley relay team of Nia Allison, Breanna Moss, Angela Korte and Vanessa Gracian, securing three points each for the Crimson & White. Makiya Moore took seventh in the weight throw just behind Tchetuchoua, scoring a pair of points.
 
Opening the afternoon with the mile run, Nia Allison posted the Aggies' best finish in the event, taking 11th with a time of 5:06.42, a personal best from the freshman from Katy, Texas.
 
The 60-meter hurdles followed, with a trio of Aggies participating. Aliyah Logan was the first member of the Crimson & White to advance to finals competition on Saturday, recording a time of 8.41 seconds, taking second in her heat and fourth overall. T'Erica Boyd finished just outside the top-eight qualifiers, finishing ninth with a time of 8.77. Breanna Moss recorded her second-fastest time of the season, posting a time of 8.93.
 
Terice Steen and Mickaliliah Vassell advanced from the 400m dash prelims to the finals on Saturday, finishing with times of 56.06 and 56.07 respectively. Vassell is in her first season with the Aggies after transferring in as an All-American from NMJC in Hobbs, New Mexico.
 
In the weight throw Miranda Tchetchuoa paced the Aggies, finishing top-six for the fifth time this season, posting a mark of 17.92m (58-9.5") to take sixth. Right behind Tchetchuoa in the standings was senior Makiya Moore, taking seventh with a best toss of 17.82m [58.5-5"]. Alesha Lane posted her second-best result of the season, posting a mark of 16.75m (54-11.25") to finish 12th.
 
Competing in the 800m run for just the second time this season, Thulisile Amon kept pace with her peers, advancing to Saturday's finals after posting a time of 2:11.22, the fifth-fastest time in prelims. Similarly, Albuquerque native Angela Korte ran the event for the second time in indoor competition, finishing with a personal best of 2:17.89.
 
The 200m dash proved the most successful event for NM State on Friday afternoon, with a trio of Aggies advancing to the finals. Jhana Downie breezed past the competition in her heat, securing the fourth-fastest time with a result of 24.05 seconds. Mickaliliah Vassell posted a time of 24.32 to record the seventh-fastest time and a new personal best, while Sierra Brewer nabbed the eighth and final spot after crossing the line with a time of 24.45, her second-fastest time of the season.
 
Running in the 5000m for the first time in 2024 Maggie Gibbs showed no rust, finishing in sixth place after posting a time of 17:04.30 to gain the Aggies three points. Senior Emily Stutesman finished just outside of tallying points, taking ninth with a season-best time of 17:26.2. Taking part in the event for the first time in her collegiate career, Jordan Torres finished with a time of 18:10.9.
 
Cameron Hodges was the lone entrant from NM State in the long jump, securing a new personal best with a result 5.57m (18-3.25") to finish in ninth.
 
Closing out the first day of competition for the Crimson & White, the distance medley relay quartet of Nia Allison, Breanna Moss, Angela Korte and Vanessa Gracian recorded a time of 12:21.4 to take sixth place and secure a trio of points, giving NM State 11 total points.
