RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The New Mexico State volleyball team cruised to a straight-set victory (25-17, 25-19, 25-11) over California Baptist at Van Dyne Gym in Riverside, Calif., to remain undefeated and run it's conference unbeaten streak to 28 matches. NM State has won 24-of-27 sets they've played this year including wining 12-straight sets.
Â
"I was happy everyone got in the match," said head coach
Mike Jordan who picked up his 501
st career win. "It's good for everyone's growth, we have talented players that can help us and are going to need to help us moving forward. I thought we played a clean match and defended well, which is something we struggled with yesterday and anytime you're hitting .351, you have to be pleased with the performance."
Â
NM State (8-0, 8-0 WAC) and the Lancers (4-5, 3-5) started the match blow-for-blow with the two teams tied at five through 10 points. As NM State tried to pull away, the Lancers kept battling with NM State holding on to a 12-10 lead midway through the set. However, an 8-3 run gave the Aggies some cushion at 20-13 before they eventually closed the set with back-to-back kills from
Lindsay Blakey and
Savannah Davison, 25-17. Davison went off with seven kills in the first set on 12 swings.
Â
The Aggies got out to a quick start in set two with
Lia Mosher's first-career service ace forcing a CBU timeout with NM State leading 9-4. The Aggies stayed in front but neither team was able to establish a run before another Lancer timeout with NM State leading 18-14. A Lancer error and a service ace from
Jordan George sparked a run that gave the Aggies control of the set, 22-14, before they closed it out for a 25-19 set two final. NM State hit .312 in the second set with 4 total blocks.
Â
Then, NM State turned on the jets and put on an absolute clinic to start set three. The Aggies scored the first six points of the set, including two aces from
Carly Aigner-Swesey, and 19 of the first 25 points of the set to take a 19-6 lead. From there, NM State emptied its bench with
Mari Sharp's first-career kill putting the exclamation point on a 25-11 third set. NM State's offense and defense were exceptional in the frame, hitting .458 and holding CBU to -.069 hitting.
Â
NM State's offense was unstoppable, registering 44 kills on .351 hitting while the defense held CBU to sub-.100 hitting for the second-straight match. The Aggies also recorded seven aces and 10 total blocks.
Â
Davison was the Aggies' kill leader again, smashing 13 kills on an efficient .346 hitting.
Victoria Barrett continued the torrid start to her freshman campaign with 10 kills on 17 swings with just one error for a .529 hitting percentage while
Cat Kelly hit .353 with eight kills and a career-high three blocks. Blakey and Mosher were dominant in the middle with both Aggie middles notching five total blocks.
Â
Aigner-Swesey led NM State with 19 assists with
Natalie Mikels adding 16. Aigner-Swesey and freshman Libero
Darian Markham each served up two aces.
