EL PASO - The in-state rivalry between NM State and New Mexico shifted to the El Paso Seim and Tennis Center Friday afternoon, but the change of venue didn't make the showdown any less hotly contested.
Regrettably, it was New Mexico who earned a pivotal singles win in second-flight play and the Aggies dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision to the Lobos.
DOUBLES
• A win by New Mexico on line three of doubles play was countered with a 7-5 victory by Harsha Challa and Gavi Kalaga on line one. The Aggies' top-flight team took down Yue Lin Chen and Hsiang-Wen Huang 7-5 to make matters 1-1 in tandem action.
• That left the doubles point in the hands of the second flight. In a hotly contested match, Chloe Gavino and Bella Nguyen narrowly dropped a 7-6 (7-4) decision to Danielle Quevedo and Natasha Munday. With that, the Lobos won the doubles point and took a 2-0 lead into singles action.
SINGLES
• The Lobos were staked to a 2-0 lead with a default win on line six of singles action, but that didn't deter the Aggies from battling back.
• Challa hammered Natasha Munday 6-0, 6-0 on the top line for the Aggies' first team point of the match. That was the rallying cry NM State needed as it knotted things up at two each with Bella Nguyen's 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Hsiang-Wen Huang in fifth-flight action.
• New Mexico managed to obtain the lead once again with a win on line four, but Gavi Kalaga tied things right back up with some gritty play on line three. After falling 6-3 in the opening set, Kalaga rallied back to claim a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory against Danielle Quevedo.
• With the match on the line, Chloe Gavino found herself one set away from clinching an NM State win after her 6-2 victory over Yue Lin Chen in the opening set of second-flight action. Unfortunately, Chen answered in a big way with wins of 7-5, 7-5 in the second and third sets to win the match for the Lobos.
COMING UP NEXT
• The Aggies' next chance to secure their first win of 2021 comes Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. when they welcome Seward County CC to the El Paso Swim and Tennis Center.
