Kerrville, Texas - The NM State men's golf team posted its best 36-hole score of the season and has put itself in position to compete for a tournament title on Tuesday at The Big Texan in Kerrville, Texas. The Aggies posted a score of 576 (E) on the Comanche Trace Golf Course which is good enough for second-place on the team leaderboard. The Aggies trail UTRGV by just four strokes.Â
Garrison Smith holds the 36-hole lead after a season-low 68 (-4) in the first round of the day. Ironically, this is Smith's best round since Mar. 25, 2019, when he shot a 67 on the same Comanche Trace golf course. Smith posted a one-under 71 in the second round to hold his lead and shoot a career-low 139 (-5) over the course of 36 holes.
Smith was not the only one to shine on the first day in Kerrville. In just his second career collegiate tournament,
Alvaro Morales fired a final round 69 (-3) to put himself in the top-10. Morales currently sits tied for eighth after a 36-hole score of 143 (-1).
Aidan Thomas jumped 17 spots on the leaderboard in the final 18 holes after shooting a one-under 71. Smith sits tied for 13th with a score of 148 (+4).
Scott Rescigno and
Tyler Diehl rounded out the Aggie lineup, as they each shot a 152 (+8) to finish tied for 29th.
The Aggies will begin its title chase in the final 18 holes at 7 a.m. tomorrow.
