Aggies Drop Two in Seattle

SEATTLE, Wash. - The NM State softball team (15-15) dropped both games in a doubleheader to Seattle U (15-14) Tuesday evening in Seattle, Wash. The Aggies dropped the first game by a score of 6-4 and the second game by a score of 4-1.The two losses ended the Aggies' six-game win streak and drops the Aggies to 0-2 in WAC play.

Game One
The Aggies struck first off of a Ramsay Lopez home run in the first inning, but the Aggies were unable to capitalize with runners in scoring position in a 6-4 loss. Following Lopez's home run, the Redhawks responded with four runs of its own in the bottom of the inning. Felicia De La Torre settled in and allowed just one run in the next three innings to keep the Aggies within striking distance. The Aggies chipped away at the Redhawks lead thanks to a RBI double from Hope Banales in the fourth inning. The Aggies played some small ball in the fifth inning and it paid off with two runs in the fifth to cut the lead to one. Seattle U tacked on a run in the sixth inning off of an Aggie error. to take a 6-4 lead into the final inning The Aggies had a chance in the top of the seventh inning, but they left the bases loaded. The Aggies left a total of eight runners on base throughout the game

Game Two
The Aggies once again were able to get on the scoreboard first thanks to a Kayla Bowen RBI double, but the Aggie bats went quiet in the 4-1 loss. Hailey Tanori led the game off with a single, and Matalasi Faapito drew a walk to give the Aggies runners in scoring position and Bowen delivered. However, much like game one, the Aggies struggled with runners in scoring position as they left Bowen and Faapito stranded at second and third.

The two pitchers took over in the next three innings as the teams combined for just five hits. The Redhawks broke through in the fourth inning, but Faapito recorded two straight outs to keep the score at 3-1. The Aggies had its best chance at scoring in the top of the fifth as Lopez stepped in with the bases loaded and one out, but she hit into a line drive double play. 

Chloe Rivas suffered her first loss of the year in the circle. Rivas went 3.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out two.

The teams will wrap up the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. MT in Seattle. The game can be seen live on the WAC Digital Network.

Notes
  • Hailey Tanori recorded a hit in each game to extend her career-long hitting streak to 14 games.
  • Matalasi Faapito extended her hitting streak to seven games with hits in both games. 
  • Faapito raised her batting average to .419 which is second in the WAC.
  • Tanori stole her 12th base of the year in game one. She is currently second in the WAC in stolen bases.
  • Nikki Butler was hit by a pitch in both games today. Butler has been hit 12 times this year which is third in the NCAA.
  • The Aggies will try to break a six-game losing streak to the Redhawks tomorrow. The Aggies have not beaten Seattle U since Mar. 29, 2019.
