Slow Start Hinders NM State in 5-2 Setback at GCU

Lopes claim first five team points of match

PHOENIX - Two team who hadn't lost a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) match thus far in 2021 took to the GCU Tennis Courts Sunday, but unfortunately for the NM State men's tennis team GCU came out strong and claimed a 5-2 victory.

DOUBLES
• Grand Canyon earned the upper hand early on by winning all three doubles matches. Louis Menard and Petr Stavrovskij came up on the wrong end of a 4-3 decision in flight three which was the closest match of tandem action.
• The Aggies' pairings of Nicolas Buitrago and Jordy Visser as well as Martin Simecek and Corey Clarke each fell by scores of 6-3.

SINGLES
• The first three singles decision of the day went to the Lopes, too, making it impossible for the Aggies to earn the win.
• Visser and Stavrovskij each found themselves on the wrong end of 6-4, 6-1 scores on lines four and six respectively, putting NM State at a 3-0 disadvantage.
• Menard, the Aggies' singles wins leader, couldn't get by Valentin Lang in top-flight action. NM State's junior fell by a score of 6-4, 6-3, giving the Lopes the point they needed to clinch the match.
• GCU's lead ballooned to 5-0 before Clarke broke up the shutout. The redshirt freshman claimed a 6-2, 6-7 (7), 1-0 (10-8) triumph over Wolmar Boris-Moller in flight five.
• Buitrago secured a come-from-behind win in flight two action, earning a 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3) win over Mariano Argote.

COMING UP NEXT
• The Aggies' next stop is Edinburg, Texas, for more WAC action. Beginning on Friday, April 9, NM State will play its final two WAC regular season matches of the year. The Aggies match up with Seattle U that day at a time to be determined on the campus of UTRGV.
