NM State Hammers Seattle U, 6-1, for Second WAC Win

Aggies knock Redhawks out of ranks of WAC unbeatens

EDINBURG, Texas - There is now just one Western Athletic Conference team without a loss in league play in the 2021 season.

NM State made sure of that, claiming an emphatic 6-1 WAC triumph over Seattle U Friday afternoon at the Orville I. Cox Tennis Center on the campus of UTRGV.

DOUBLES
• Corey Clarke and Martin Simecek set the tone from the get-go, claiming a one-sided 6-1 victory in flight two of tandem play.
• Though the Redhawks were able to equalize things with a 6-3 victory on the top line, Louis Menard and Petr Stavrovskij made sure NM State wouldn't lose its grip in the doubles point. The Aggies' third-flight twosome scored a 6-3 victory which handed them a 1-0 lead.

SINGLES
• Each of the lower three flights for NM State came up big to help the Aggies lock up their second WAC victory of the year.
• Clarke kept the foot on the gas for NM State, picking up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Emilio Monroy on line four.
• Jordy Visser made matters 3-0 in favor of NM State with a sound 6-1, 6-3 beating of Lars Schmassmann in fifth-flight action.
• Needing just one more win to clinch the match, Stavrovskij was up to that task. NM State's freshman scored a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Mats Krause in sixth-flight play to ensure victory for the Aggies.
• Menard, the Aggies' singles wins leader, returned to the win column, notching a 7-6, 6-2 win against Eli Ogilvy in top-flight play.
• Nicolas Buitrago kept NM State's hopes for a shutout victory intact by coming up with a 3-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-3) comeback win over Lucas Cerbelli on line two.
• The second three-set match of the day went to Seattle U. Simecek started strong by posting a 6-2 win over Julian Worn on line three, but the Redhawks' singles competitor showed a good deal of fight from there. Worn win the next two sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-4 to earn the win and break up the Aggies' shutout bid.

COMING UP NEXT
• In their regular-season league finale, the Aggies take on the Cougars of Chicago State Saturday morning at 8:00 p.m. from the Orville I. Cox Tennis Center.
