EDINBURG, Texas - Finish strong? That's exactly what the NM State men's tennis team did in its final WAC regular season match.
Erasing an early deficit in doubles play, NM State hiked its record to 3-1 in WAC action by dominating the rest of the way in a 6-1 victory over Chicago State Saturday morning at the Orville I. Cox Tennis Center on the campus of UTRGV.
DOUBLES
• The only lead the Cougars enjoyed came in the infancy of tandem action. Chicago State scored a 6-4 win on that line as Corey Clarke and Martin Simecek were out-dueled by Pedro Alvarez and Javier Sanchez.
• Though things were a little tighter than the Aggies may have liked on lines one and three, they still managed to outlast the Cougars in both flights. Nicolas Buitrago and Petr Stavrovskij claimed a 7-6 (3) victory over Jesus Perez and Max Sandoval to pull NM State even.
• Louis Menard and Jordy Visser did the rest, posting a hard-fought 7-6 (4) victory in top-flight action to give NM State the doubles point as well as a 1-0 lead.
SINGLES
• Once one-on-one play got going, NM State made sure to sustain the momentum it gathered up from its doubles wins. Biutrago dominated on line two, extending the Aggies' lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 beatdown of Perez.
• Clarke made matters 3-0 in favor of NM State with his triumph in flight four. The Aggies' redshirt freshman posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jakub Zamorski which put his team on the cusp of victory.
• Simecek finished the job over in flight three action, earning a 6-3, 6-3 win over Pedja Kolaric to ensure the win for NM State.
• Though Chicago State got a point back with a win down on line five, NM State didn't allow the Cougars to do any more winning than that. Stavrovskij came up with a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) victory against Max Sandoval in flight six action.
• Menard helped NM State finish strong, coming away with a 7-6 (2), 6-2 top-flight triumph over Javier Sanchez.
