TUCSON, Ariz. - Junior Harsha Challa picked up a singles victory for the NM State women's tennis team, but the Aggies couldn't get any more wins than that in a 6-1 setback at Arizona Monday.
DOUBLES
• Harsha Challa and Gavi Kalaga were the only Aggie doubles team to win games in Monday's matchup. NM State's top-flight tandem fell 6-3 to Gitte Heynemans and Kayla Wilkins.
• In second and third-flight tandem play, NM State dropped 6-0 decisions to their Arizona counterparts which allowed the hosts to open up a 1-0 lead headed into one-on-one action.
SINGLES
• Arizona's lead increased quickly as Lucjia Josipovic was upended by Heynemans in flight six play. Josipovic fell 6-3 in the opening set before retiring from the remainder of the match.
• The Wildcats' advantage reached 3-0 following Bella Nguyen's 6-1, 6-1 loss at the hands of Zandberg on line five. Arizona clinched the match in flight three play when Miranda Bishard fell 6-0, 6-4 to Abby Amos.
• Gavi Kalaga started strong, winning her first set against Zandberg by a 6-4 score. However, NM State's junior would go on to lose her singles bout on line four after finding herself on the wrong end of a 6-3 score in the second set. Zandberg completed the comeback with a 1-0 (10-2) win in the third and final frame.
• Another three-set battle manifested itself in second-flight play. Chloe Gavino came up with a 6-3 win in the opening set against Jelena Lukic on line two, but Arizona's player battled back. Lukic won the match 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7).
• Challa's win came in the final match of the day. She made all the right moves down the stretch, claiming a 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) victory over Kayla Wilkins in top-flight play.
COMING UP NEXT
• The Aggies and Wildcats will take to the courts at the Lanelle Robson Tennis Center again Tuesday morning for another non-conference bout. First serve has been set for 10:00 a.m.
