DENVER – After setting the school record for winning percentage (.938), the New Mexico State volleyball team saw five Aggies win seven All-WAC awards with head coach
Mike Jordan earning his 10
th Coach of the Year award, the Western Athletic Conference announced on Wednesday.
Â
Despite not being able to practice in Las Cruces until Jan.19 and not hosting a home match until March 15, Jordan led his squad to a 15-1 record and a second-straight WAC Regular Season Championship. Jordan also picked up his 500
th win in a 3-0 victory at California Baptist on Feb. 22 while NM State posted the highest single-match hitting percentage in the NCAA this season when it hit .554 against Seattle U on March 3.
Â
After leading an Aggie offense that ranks first nationally in kills (15.16) and ninth in hitting percentage (.302) with 3.18 kills per set, redshirt junior outside hitter
Savannah Davison earned her second-straight First-Team All-WAC nod. The Toronto, Ontario, native hit at least 15 kills three times including a season-high 18 in a 3-0 sweep of GCU on Feb. 16. Davison was named WAC Player of the Week twice.
Â
Joining Davison on the All-WAC First Team is middle blocker
Lia Mosher. The redshirt junior finished the regular season hitting .417, good for second in the WAC and is on-pace to post the second-best single-season hitting percentage in school history and the sixth-best in WAC history. The Ruidoso, N.M., native dominated at the net, hitting under .300 just three times on the season and finished with 60 total blocks.
Â
Along with Mosher, junior
Shaney Lipscomb also ranked top-3 in the conference for hitting percentage. The Aggie right side picked up an All-WAC Second Team nod after hitting .337 and averaging 2.88 kills per set. The Grossmont College transfer set the school record for hitting percentage in a three set match when she torched Seattle U for 14 kills on 14 swings to hit a perfect 1.000 on March 3 in El Paso. Lipscomb is the only player in the NCAA this season to hit 1.000 on at least 14 swings.
Â
Freshman
Victoria Barrett cleaned up at the WAC awards, earning three awards after bursting onto the scene in her first college campaign. The Stafford, Va., product was named WAC Freshman of the Year, WAC All-Freshman Team and Second-Team All-WAC after averaging 3.11 kills per set. The 5-9 outside hitter hit .256 and recorded double-digit kills in 10 matches including 18 to open the season against Dixie State.
Â
Barrett wasn't the only NM State freshman to impress, as
Darian Markham also earned Freshman All-WAC honors. The Aggie libero started all 16 matches in her freshman campaign and led NM State with 3.73 digs per set. Markham also earned WAC Defensive Player of the Week after posting a career-high 19 digs at Chicago State.
Â
The WAC Champion Aggies now look to three-peat at the WAC Tournament in Orem, Utah, beginning with a semifinal matchup on Friday, April 2, at 5 p.m. (MT). After receiving a first-round bye as the one-seed, NM State is set to play the winner of the Chicago State/UT Rio Grande Valley quarterfinal.
