COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Having to traverse the last mile-and-a-half to Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park on foot due to a crash involving its bus, the NM State baseball team went toe-to-toe with Texas A&M once they arrived but the SEC Aggies broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth with a run and added two more to hand NM State a 4-1 loss Friday night.
SCORING SUMMARY
B1 | Texas A&M's first two hits of the game yielded the game's first run, too. After Ray Alejo led off the game with a double, A&M's top hitter Will Frizzell brought him around with an RBI single to right which put NM State at a 1-0 disadvantage.
T4 | With starting pitcher Chris Barraza buzzing on the hill, the Aggies were able to manufacture an equalizing run in the fourth. Zerek Saenz shot a single through the left side on the first pitch of the frame and eventually made it to second on a balk. Initially he was called out on a pickoff play at first, but after a lengthy review that call was overturned and changed to a balk. A groundout allowed Saenz to move to third and a passed ball helped him sprint home and tie matters at 1-1.
B6 | A&M pushed its way back in front by capitalizing on a one-out error by NM State. Ty Coleman reached on a misplay at third base to put runners on the corners. From there, pinch hitter Zane Schmidt laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to put the home team ahead 2-1.
B7 | Coming on in relief of Barraza in the seventh, Sammy Natera managed to strike out a pair in the frame but not before Texas A&M padded its lead. Upon issuing a one-out walk which put two runners on, Natera's wild offering allowed those two runners to move into scoring position. Frizzell took it from there, pushing a tow-run single up the middle to put NM State in a 4-1 hole.
AT THE DISH
• A pair of NM State players - Jake Baer and Austin Duffy - reached base twice. Baer generated two of the Aggies' three hits on the night (both singles).
• For Texas A&M, Alejo and Frizzell each amassed two of the team's eight hits. The latter did most of the damage on offense, driving in three of the home team's four runs on the night.
ON THE HILL
• Barraza (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season despite keeping Texas A&M's lineup in check for most of the night. The right-hander tossed six frames of six-hit, four strikeout baseball and surrendered a trio of runs. Natera totaled four punchouts through his two innings of work.
• For A&M, Dustin Saenz amassed eight strikeouts through 7 2/3 innings of action. The lone run he gave up was of the unearned variety and he issued just a single base on balls. Joseph Menefee worked the last 1 1/3 frames to collect the save.
ON DECK
• NM State and Texas A&M continue their three-game series Saturday afternoon from Olson Field at Blue Bell Park. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. MT with Josh Laukkanen set to get the ball for NM State.
