TUCSON, Ariz. - Following the first two rounds of the Arizona Wildcat Invitational at the Sewailo Golf Club, the NM State women's golf team sits in 13th place out of 16 competing teams.
Through Monday's 32 holes, the Aggies carded a team score of 305-304=609 (+33). Heading into Tuesday's third and final round, NM State sits nine strokes behind 10th place. Coming on especially strong in her second round of the day, Amelia McKee came up with three birdies and an eagle through her final 18 holes to shoot a 71 (-1) for the round. McKee is the Aggies' leader on the individual leaderboard as she sits in 25th place.
"We struggled at the beginning and end of each round today," said NM State head coacy Danny Bowen. "It's frustrating to get off to such bad starts, but we actually played really good golf in the middle of the rounds."
Pun Chanachai penciled in the lowest score by any Aggie competitor in the first 18 holes Monday, shooting a 75 (+3) on her first run through the course. Following her second round, Chanachai sits in a tie for 54th with a scorecard of 75-78=153 (+9).
One stroke back of Chanachai is Karen Miyamoto who carded a 78-76=154 (+10) while Alex Quihius put up a 77-79=156 (+12) to sit in 62nd. Alison Gastelum rounded out the Aggies' fivesome by generating a 77-80=157 (+13).
"Amelia came back strong for us in the afternoon, especially after her start," Bowen continued. "She showed a lot of mental toughness to be able to finish under par today."
The Aggies hope to move up the team leaderboard Tuesday during the final round of the event. Play begins with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m.
