BOULDER CITY, Nev. – Following the second round of action at the Western Athletic Conference Championship at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev., the New Mexico State women's golf team is in the hunt for the team title sitting at two-under-par 574. All five Aggies are in the top-12.
The Aggies sit two strokes behind team-leader GCU who is shooting 572 (-4) through two rounds of play.
"Today was a tough battle," said head coach
Danny Bowen. "We did not start out well as a group but rebounded very well, especially at the finish. I'm so happy for both Alex and Alison to give us counting scores after not really playing well all day, they kept us in it today."
After finishing yesterday tied for 10
th,
Pun Chanachai carded a four-under-par 68, sinking seven birdies, to storm into second place at two-under-par 142. Chanchai trails GCU's Payton Fehringer (-4) by two strokes heading into the final round of action.
"Pun was a star today" Bowen added. "She had the confident stride back as well as her ball striking. Tomorrow will be fun, only two shots back with a chance to win."
The Aggie trio of
Alison Gastelum,
Karen Miyamoto and
Amelia McKee all scored a one-over-par 145 through two rounds and sit in a seventh-place tie.
Alex Quihuis rounds out the NM State five-stack in a 12
th-place tie with a four-over-par 148 after the first two rounds.
NM State is now set to go for its 10
th WAC championship with the final round of action getting underway from Boulder Creek tomorrow, April 21. The Aggies are set to begin teeing off at approximately 10:30 a.m. (MT) with live scoring from
GolfStat.
