STEPHENVILLE, Texas - For the first time in over a month, the NM State baseball team is the owner of a winning streak.
The way the Aggies made it possible was quite impressive.
Brandon Dieter smashed a pair of home runs - including a ninth-inning grand slam - the Aggies amassed five long balls as part of a 15-hit assault on Tarleton pitching and that allowed NM State to cruise to a 17-6 victory over the Texans Sunday afternoon at the Cecil Ballow Complex.
NM State won its final two games of the four-game WAC set between it and Tarleton, marking the first time the Aggies have won consecutive contests since March 20-21.
SCORING PLAYS
B1 | Hoping to their third consecutive WAC series, the Texans came out swinging. Kemue Thomas-Rivera launched a two-run homer to left off of Aggie starter Cam Blazek and that one-out shot handed the hosts an early 2-0 lead.
T3 | In order to tie the game, the Aggies turned to the heart of their order. After Connor Laux and Zerek Saenz started the third with a pair of singles, Kevin Jimenez continued his hot-hitting ways by stinging a one-out, two-run double down the left field line to tie things up at two each.
B3 | Tarleton took its final lead of the game when London Green punched a two-out RBI double to the gap in left. Green's extra-base knock put the hosts on top 3-2, but NM State answered in a big way from there.
T5 | Tabak led off the fifth with a single before two of the first three Texan errors in the inning allowed the Aggies to knot things up. After moving to third on a misplayed ground ball, Tabak raced him on a bad pickoff try of Saenz at first base to pull NM State even. Cal Villareal recorded a productive out when his RBI groundout to second handed the visitors a 4-3 lead. From there, NM State used the long ball to put the game away. Designated hitter Zach Smits smashed his second three-run homer in as many days before Brandon Dieter launched a solo shot to cap off the Aggies' six-run frame. After NM State's three-hit assault on the Texans' arms, its lead stood at 8-3.
B6 | Managing to chip away slightly, the Texans scratched one run across in the sixth off of Aggie relief arm Ben Des Rosiers. After surrendering a leadoff double, Des Rosiers allowed a one-out RBI single off the bat of Dean Frew which trimmed NM State's lead to 8-4.
T7 | A new Tarleton pitcher - Ty Jones - entered in the seventh, but he was unable to cool off the Aggies' bats. Continuing their long ball barrage, the Aggies received two-run homers from both Tabak and Ethan Mann to push their lead to 12-4.
T8 | More extra-base hits were on the docket for the Aggies in the eighth as Dieter's one-out double was followed up with an RBI two-bagger courtesy of Britt Graham. The Aggie backstop's second hit of the day extended the visitors' lead to 13-4.
B8 | The Texans' final hit of the game was a two-run round-tripper courtesy of first baseman Blake Burns. That long ball cut the Aggies' lead to 13-6.
T9 | Dieter put the finishing touches on his monstrous day at the dish by hammering a two-out grand slam on a 3-2 offering by Garrett Leggitt. The grand slam helped the Aggies go over the 15-run mark for the third time in 2021 and handed the visitors a 17-6 lead.
AT THE DISH
• Eight of the 11 Aggie hitters who stepped foot in the batter's box came up with a hit. Along with Dieter, Jimenez racked up three hits and that pair combined to drive in seven of the Aggies' 17 runs.
• Graham, Saenz and Tabak added two hits apiece to the Aggies' attack and once the dust settled, Dieter (five), Smits (three), Jimenez (two), Mann (two) and Tabak (two) concluded their respective Sunday's with multiple RBI.
• Though they did manage to amass double-digits in the hit column, the Texans didn't have an answer for the Aggies' home run power. Fowler and Green each struck for two of the hosts' 10 hits with Fowler reaching base a team-high four times.
• NM State's 15 hits represented the team's fourth-highest total of the season as well as its highest hit total in a road game during 2021.
ON THE HILL
• Blazek (2-1) moved back above the .500 mark by powering through five innings of three-run baseball. The sophomore struck out four while letting up six hits as well as one walk.
• Joey Arellano was the only NM State arm who didn't let a run cross home plate. He worked a scoreless ninth and added one to the Aggies' total of seven strikeouts.
• Though he didn't allow a single earned run, Justin Waltmon (2-2) got hit with the loss after working the fifth inning. Waltmon let five unearned runs cross home plate on three walks an an equal number of hits.
• Aside from Zach Poe, who came on in the sixth, no Tarleton pitcher found themselves safe from the Aggies' bats. Poe was the only one of the Texan's seven arms who didn't allow an NM State run to score.
COMING UP NEXT
• After five consecutive games on the road, the Aggies return to Presley Askew Field to begin a five-game home stand Tuesday afternoon with a non-conference showdown with Benedictine Mesa. First pitch for that midweek battle has been set for 5:00 p.m.
