MARICOPA, Ariz. – The New Mexico State women's golf team finished the first day of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in third place following the first two rounds of action at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club on Monday.
 
"We had a pretty good day overall," said head coach Danny Bowen. "WE started out great in round one but let a few shots slip away. The second round was a bit tougher in the wind but we also had a few too many unforced errors that cost us. I'm still proud of how the girls fought out there since it was a long, hot day. We're still in position to put together a good round tomorrow and be in the mix for the win, we're excited for the opportunity."
 
Four Aggies are in the top-20 with Pun Chanachai and Alex Quihuis leading the way in a seventh-place tie. Quihuis came out of the gates strong, sinking birdies on four of her first five holes to finish the day with an even-par 72-72 – 144 while Chanachai was steady all day to also finish at 72-72 – 144.
 
Alison Gastelum rode a 71 (-1) in the first round to shoot a 147 (+3) to finish the day in a tie for 16^th alongside teammate Amelia McKee who carded an even-par 72 in the final round to finish at three-over-par 147. Karen Miyamoto also had a solid day on the links shooting 72-76 – 148 (+4) and finished tied for 23^rd.
 
Valentina Origel, competing as an individual, heads into the final round tied for 67^th after carding a 154 (+7).
 
"Amelia finished great for us in round two and it was good to see Alex play so consistent for us," Bowen added. "We know Pun will be there with a great final round tomorrow as well."
 
The Aggies are set to wrap up the Cowgirl Classic, tomorrow, April 6. Aggie fans can keep up with the action thanks to live scoring from GolfStat.
