Early Offense not Enough as Aggies Fall at No. 7 Arizona

Aggies will shift attention to next week's WAC Tournament

TUCSON, Ariz. --  Despite leading 1-0 and 2-1, the NM State Aggies fell 14-3 Tuesday night at Hi Corbett field to No. 7 Arizona in seven innings.

In defeat, lefty Brandon Rodriguez threw three strong innings for the Aggies (19-32) in relief. The difference in the contest was an eight-run fourth inning that extended the Wildcats (36-13) lead from 3-2 to 11-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

After NM State went down 1-2-3 against Arizona starting pitcher Riley Cooper, junior Frank Dickson Jr answered with a scoreless frame to keep the game scoreless after one.

In the top of the second, the Aggies used a one-out single from Brandon Dieter and an RBI single from catcher Jason Bush to take a 1-0 lead.

After the Wildcats answered with an RBI single by Nik McClaughry to tie the contest at one, the Aggies took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third when Tommy Tabak scored on a wild pitch. Tabak led off the frame with a walk.

Arizona answered the Aggie run with a pair in the bottom of third using a Daniel Susac double and a wild pitch strikeout to take a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Wildcats took control of the contest for good, using the eight-run frame to take an 11-2 lead.

The Aggies answered with a run in the fifth on an RBI single from Cal Villareal, and used the three strong innings from Rodriguez to get to the seventh down 11-3.

In the seventh, Arizona loaded the bases with nobody out, and ultimately plated all three runs to secure a 14-3 seven inning victory.

AT THE PLATE:
• Zerek Sanez went 1-3. The outfielder recorded his 73rd hit of the season.
• The Las Cruces native closes the regular season with a .381 average. Sanez's .381 average is the second-best mark in the WAC.
• Saenz's 73 hits lead the WAC.
