LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The NM State track and field teams announced three signees for Doug Reynold's 2021-22 class. Jahnya Hill, Kayla O'Connell and Victoria Ovalles have each signed to compete for the Aggies in the upcoming track seasons.
Hill comes from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where she competed for the Northeast High School Hurricanes. Hill has had a very successful career with the Hurricanes. Hill finished her senior season with an 11th-place finish in the 400m dash at the Florida 3A Track and Field State Championships. Hill also helped the Hurricanes to a fourth-place finish in the 4x400m relay and a fifth-place finish in the 4x800m relay. In this past season, Hill finished in the top three in the 400m three times with her only title coming at the BCAA North Central Qualifier with a time of 57.89. Hill's personal best time of 56.20 in the 400m dash which came at the Cardinal Gibbons Last Chance Meet on Apr. 6, 2019. Hill plans on majoring in sports medicine at NM State.
The Morenci, Ariz., native, O'Connell will be a key piece to an already strong distance crew at NM State. A two-time member of the Arizona D4 All-State Cross Country Team, O'Connell ended her career with six state meet appearances between track and cross country at Morenci High School. O'Connell holds the school record in the 5k with a time of 19:14.00. O'Connell is a two-time Division IV Section II cross country state champion. She was also named to the All-Arizona Girls Cross Country Team by the
Arizona Republic in 2020.
The last signee comes from just down the road in El Paso, Texas. Ovalles will join O'Connell and the rest of the talented Aggies' distance crew. Ovalles was also a member of the Eastwood volleyball team as a middle hitter. While having success on the track, Ovalles also has an impressive record in the classroom. Ovalles was in the top 10% of her class, had perfect attendance at Eastwood High School, was a member of the National Honors Society, the Science National Honors Society and was a student government officer. Ovalles will be majoring in nursing during her time at NM State.
