Four Aggies Named to Preseason All-WAC Squad

Aggies picked to finish second in the WAC West Division.

DENVER – Four members of the New Mexico State women's volleyball team were named to the Preseason All-Western Athletic Conference Team while the Aggies were picked to finish second in the Western Division in a poll of the League's head coaches, the WAC announced on Wednesday morning. On the Preseason All-WAC team are Lia Mosher, Victoria Barrett, Shaney Lipscomb and Carly Aigner-Swesey.

In the coaches' poll, Utah Valley was picked to win the WAC's Western Division with four first-place votes and 34 total points, just edging out the Aggies who picked up the other three first-place votes and finished with 33 total points. Grand Canyon (26 points) is picked to finish third followed by California Baptist (20), Dixie State (16) and Chicago State (10). Seattle U was picked to finish last with six points.

NM State is coming off a 16-2 season where it captured its second-straight WAC Regular Season title including head coach Mike Jordan's 500th career win at California Baptist on Feb. 22. The Aggies also posted the second-highest single-match hitting percentage in the NCAA this season when they hit .554 against Seattle U on March 3.

After being named to the All-WAC First Team and the AVCA All-Midwest Region Team, Mosher was named preseason All-WAC. The Ruidoso, N.M., native led an Aggie offense that ranked seventh nationally in hitting percentage (.295) with a .420 hitting percentage. Mosher's .420 hitting percentage was the second-best hitting percentage in program history and the sixth highest in the WAC.

Sophomore Barrett cleaned up at last season's All-WAC awards being named WAC Freshman of the Year, All-WAC Second Team and to the WAC All-Freshman Team. Barrett, a native of Stafford, Va., averaged 3.11 kills per set, hit .256 and recorded double-digit kills in 10 matches. The sophomore outside hitter also showed out at the WAC Tournament and was named to the WAC All-Tournament team.

Along with Barrett, Lipscomb was also named Second Team All-WAC in her first season in Las Cruces. The Grossmont College transfer ranked fifth in the WAC for hitting percentage at .320 while averaging 2.83 kills per set. Lipscomb was also the only player in the NCAA last season to hit 1.000 on at least 14 attempts when she hit 14 kills on 14 attempts against Seattle U on March 3.

After helping to facilitate an Aggie offense that ranked second nationally in kills per set (13.93) and assists per set (13.93) and seventh in hitting percentage (.295), Aigner-Swesey earned a Preseason All-WAC nod. The Wrightwood, Calif., native averaged 19.61 assists per set and notched 13 aces on the season.

NM State opens 2021 with an open scrimmage against Texas Tech at the Pan American Center on Saturday, Aug. 21, at 12 p.m. (MT). Tickets for the match are just five dollars.
