SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Led by Garrison Smith, the NM State men's golf program fired a field best 291 (+3) Tuesday to finish second overall at the Lone Star Invitational hosted by UTSA at TPC San Antonio.
Entering the day +5 overall, Smith used five birdies over the first 17 holes to pull into a three-way tie with Michael Rome and Hunter Bott of UTSA. Needing a par on the final hole of his afternoon to remain tied for the lead, Smith recorded a bogey to finish his round at -4 (68) overall and his tournament at +1. His score of +1 overall was good for a tie for third place with Pedro Marin of Lamar.
After entering the day at +4 overall and tied for 12th, Aidan Thomas and Scott Rescigno fired identical rounds of 74 Tuesday to finish tied for 10th with Wyatt Koricanek of Texas State.
The fourth and final Aggie in the top-20 was Alvaro Morales who fired his second consecutive round of 75 to finish at +8 overall.
Led by Bott and Rome, UTSA fired a combined three-round team score of 868 (+4) to take home the team title. The Aggies finished at +16 overall to finish second, five shots clear of third place Louisiana (+21). Texas State (+25), Lamar (+27), UT Arlington (+43), Houston Baptist (+47), Oral Roberts (+47), Incarnate Word (+54) and UT-Martin (+59) rounded out the top-10 finishers.
