LAS VEGAS - NM State suffered its first dual match setback of the young 2022 season Saturday, dropping a 4-0 decision to UNLV at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The setback dropped the Aggies' 2022 mark to 2-1 while UNLV hiked its record to 2-0 in dual match action.
DOUBLES
• In search of their first win as a tandem, Martin Simecek and Itay Feigin couldn't get the jump on UNLV's duo of Christopher Bulus and Jordan Sauer early on. NM State's third-flight tandem found themselves on the wrong end of a 6-2 decision.
• Hoping to keep their doubles record perfect in 2022, Gijs Akkermans and Corey Clarke instead started slow and were unable to close the gap late as the Aggies' second-flight tandem dropped a 6-3 decision against Milos Dabic and Zach Brodney.
• At the time the Rebels clinched the double point, Louis Menard and Jordy Visser trailed Jack Atherton and Anton Ornberg 5-3 in top-flight action.
SINGLES
• UNLV's lead grew to 2-0 after Akkermans wound up on the wrong end of a 6-3, 6-1 decision against Dabic in fourth-flight singles play. Akkermans' singles mark in dual match action moved to 0-2 in 2022 with his loss.
• Though Simecek grabbed five games in his one-on-one bout, it wasn't enough to prevent the Rebels from obtaining a 3-0 lead. Simecek's 6-3, 6-2 setback to Sauer on line two put the Aggies' backs against the wall.
• Menard was dealt his first dual match singles loss of the season in top-flight play as UNLV clinched the win. Bulus claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win in order to bring the match to its conclusion.
• Visser was denied a chance at his third singles victory of 2022 once the match was clinched by the Rebels. At the time of UNLV's match-clinching point, Visser was up 6-4, 5-4 against Zach Garner on line five.
• Another Aggie, Feigin, was poised to pick up a singles win, too. The freshman owned a 7-5, 2-1 edge over Tom Ciszewski in sixth-flight action.
COMING UP NEXT
• NM State hopes to pick up its third dual meet win of the young 2022 season Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Center. The Aggies are scheduled to take on Hawaii at 11:00 a.m. MT in the last of four matches in their opening weekend of the spring.
