LAWRENCE, Kan. – A tough field and adverse weather conditions combined to push NM State women's golf on Monday and Tuesday. The Aggies finished the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational in ninth-place, ahead of four Power Five schools.
Tuesday's final round was shortened due to a freeze warning and a resumption of Monday's second round. When all was said and done, teams only played nine holes in an abbreviated finale.
NM State was paired with Boston College and Sam Houston for the shortened round.
Kaylee Chen picked up the only birdie for NM State in the third round as she went under-par on hole 8. Chen led NM State throughout the Sunflower Invitational, just missing a top 25 finish. Tying for 26th in Lawrence, Chen shot a 38 (+2) to climb seven places in the final round.
Alison Gastelum posted the second-lowest score of the week for NM State, shooting a 197 (+17).
Emma Bunch and
Valentina Origel wound up right behind Gastelum, shooting 199 (+19) and 200 (+20), respectively.
The Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational marked the tournament of the fall for NM State. The Aggies will be back in action in 2023 when they head to Long Beach, California at the end of 2023.
