LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Back on top. The NM State women's golf team has shot to the top of the Golf Iconic Classic leaderboard. Entering the second round, NM State trailed Pepperdine by ten strokes before posting a tournament-low 280. The Aggies shot eight-under-par on Tuesday – Seven strokes better than the second-lowest team score.
The Aggies have two members –
Alison Gastelum and
Valentina Origel – inside the top-five as they enter the final round. Gastelum birded hole 18 to take a break the tie with Origel, taking a one-shot lead. Origel posted a career-low 68 (-4) on Tuesday to highlight the NM State individual performances. A top-ten finish for Origel would be the first of her career.
Emma Bunch fired the second-lowest round of her young career with a 69 (-3) on Tuesday. Bunch joins Gastelum, Origel, and Meiji Tungprapuvong inside the top-25 heading into the final day. Playing as an individual, Tungprapunvong carded a 74 (+2) and enters the final round tied for 15th.
In the second round of the Golf Iconic Classic,
Kaylee Chen matched her second-lowest round with a 76 (+4) and
Marley Moncada sank three birdies in a career-best effort. NM State will chase the Golf Iconic Classic on Wednesday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. MT. Fans who cannot make it to the NMSU Golf Course can follow every shot on

Round Two Notes
- Tuesday's 280 is NM State's lowest team round of the season.
- The Aggies lead all teams with 34 birdies, which helped propel their surge up the leaderboard.
- Alison Gastelum has birdied 11 times throughout the tournament which is tied for the lead among all players.
- A 68 (-4) marks the best round of Valentina Origel's career. Previously, Origel's career-low came at the 2022 Chambers Bay Invitational (70).
- As a team, NM State is tied with Oral Roberts for the lowest scoring average on Par 5 holes at 4.77.
- Gastelum has the third-lowest scoring average on Par 3s in the Golf Iconic Classic at 2.71.
- Emma Bunch climbed 33 spots in the individual rankings to a tie for 23rd.
- Jasmine Leovao of Long Beach State once again leads all players, sitting at 137 (-7) after two rounds.
- Wednesday's final round will begin at 8:30 a.m. MT with a shotgun start. NM State will be grouped with Pepperdine and Long Beach State as it looks to clinch the Golf Iconic Classic championship.
