Seven Aggies Etch Their Names Into the Finals

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Day one of the WAC Indoor Track & Field Championships has concluded, and several Aggies put up exceptional performances setting themselves up nicely to compete in the finals tomorrow. In case you weren't keeping up, here is a quick rundown of some of the action:

1 mile Prelim
Thobile Amon recorded a time of 5:07.67, which was the fourth-best for her heat. Ten runners advance to the finals (top three from each heat, plus next four best times). Her finish put in the eighth spot, which means she qualifies for the finals, which will take place tomorrow at 2:40 p.m.

Women 60m Dash Prelim
Grace Pendarvis set a personal record in the 60m with a time of 7.55. With top eight runners advancing (top one from each heat, plus next best three times), Pendarvis qualified finals after coming in second in her respected heat. Tomorrow's 60m final will take place at 3:50 p.m.

200m Dash Prelim
Pendarvis also posted a new personal best time of 24.21, which was also the best in the competition. With the top eight times advancing to the finals, Pendarvis will be competing again in the 200m final, which will take place at 4:30 p.m.

Aliyah Logan also set a personal record in the 200m with a time of 25.24. Unfortunately, this was not enough to qualify for the final tomorrow.

400m Dash Prelim
Jhana Downie and Terice Steen both set personal records in the event. Downie with a time of 56.03 and Steen with a time of 56.30. Both athletes qualified after posting top eight times in the event. Tomorrow's 400m is scheduled for 3:25 p.m.

800m Dash Prelim
Thulisile Amon qualified for tomorrow's final after recording a time of 2:16.64. The top two finishes from each heat (two heats), plus the next four best times, advance to the final. Amon finished third in her heat and recorded the next best time among those that didn't place in the top two. The 800m final is scheduled for 4:10 p.m. tomorrow.

5000m Run Final
Emily Stutesman and Maggie Gibbs recorded personal best times in the 5000m. Stutesman with a 17:35.24 time, good enough for fifth place, and Gibbs with a 17:35.24 time, good enough for sixth place. Their performances gave the Aggies seven points combined for the meet, bringing their total to ten for the day.

60m Hurdles Prelim
The top spot from each heat (three heats) plus the next five best times advance to the final. Aliyah Logan and Valissa Brown were able to take the top spots for their respective heats, automatically qualifying them for the final tomorrow at 3:05 p.m. Logan recorded a time of 8.39, and Brown recorded a time of 8.51.

4000m Distance Medley Final
The quartet of Mia Regan, Israel Swanson, Sheyenne Drake, and Richelle Sandin placed sixth overall in the race posting a combined time of 12:34.20. This also gave NM State 3 points total when it comes to the overall meet scoring.

Long Jump Final
Valissa Brown took home the ninth spot in the Long Jump with a mark of 5.58m (18' 3.75"), setting a new personal record for the event.

Meet Scoring
The Aggies currently have a total of ten points for the meet, which is good for eight among competing schools. With more Aggies set to complete in the finals tomorrow, the NM State Indoor Track & Field team looks to continue adding to that total in hopes of reclaiming the WAC Indoor Track and Field Championship that they claimed back in 2020.
