Trio of Long Balls Lift Aggies in Series Opener

The Basics
Game Four
Score: Oakland 7, NM State 12
Records: Oakland (2-2); NM State (3-1)
Location: Las Cruces, N.M. (Presley Askew Field)

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – On Friday afternoon, the NM State Aggies managed to pick up right where they left off on Sunday, rolling to a dominant win at Presley Askew Field. With the Oakland Golden Grizzlies in town, the Aggies jumped out to a 12-0 lead, fueled by an eight-run fourth inning. When all was said and done, the Aggies pushed their winning streak to three games with a 13-7 victory in the series opened.

In the first inning, Ryan Grabosch lifted a sacrifice fly to left field with the bases loaded to plate Gunner Antillon and give NM State an early lead. Leading off the second inning, Cal Villareal launched a moonshot into the trees in right field to move the Aggies lead to two.

After Rorik Maltrud fanned a pair of Golden Grizzlies in the top of the third, Grabosch picked up his second RBI of the day with a single through the left side to score Kevin Jimenez

To lead off the fourth, the Aggies ripped three consecutive extra-base hits, fueled by Brandon Dieter's two-run blast two left field. Preston Godfrey played Gunner Antillon with a single through the right side. Immediately after the Godfrey single, Jimenez scampered home on a wild pitch. Logan Gallina laced a triple just inside the right field line to score Godfrey and Villareal picked up a single to drive in Gallina. After a pitching change, Gallina and Zerek Saenz scored on a bases loaded walk and a fielder's choice to wrap up the eight-run frame.

After the massive fourth, the Aggies were able to take advantage of a two-out error in the fifth inning that loaded the bases. AJ Garcia made the most of a pinch-hit opportunity and drew a bases loaded walk to score Grabosch.

In the sixth and seventh innings, the Golden Grizzlies began to claw back into the ballgame with a pair of two-run innings. In the eighth inning, Oakland cut into the lead a little more with a pair of RBI singles that led to a three-run inning.

The Aggies needed a spark to take the momentum away from Oakland and they got just that out of Nolan Funke. In just his second plate appearance of the season, Funke put a ball into orbit and pushed NM State's lead to 13-7.

For the third time this season, Noah Estrella took to the mound in the ninth. After issuing a leadoff walk, the right-hander sat down three consecutive Oakland hitters to end the ballgame.

Quick Hits
