NM State Falls Twice at #16 Arizona

Aggies take on one of nation's best twice

TUSCON, Ariz. - Pitted against one of the nation's top squads, the NM State men's tennis team suffered a pair of losses to 16th-ranked Arizona Sunday at the Lanelle Robson Tennis Center.

Match One | #16 Arizona 7, NM State 0
DOUBLES

• The Aggies' top-flight doubles team of Louis Menard and Jordy Visser produced yet another win in 2022. That NM State pair took down the Wildcats' top-flight tandem of Jett Middleton and Colton Smith by a 6-4 score.
• That win, though, was the only one NM State came up with in tandem play. Corey Clarke and Gijs Akkermans, the reigning WAC Doubles Team of the Week, dropped a 6-2 decision against Carlos Hassey and Filip Malbasic on line two.
• Arizona clinched the doubles point in flight three play as Ryan Ford and Luca Fe D'Ostiani - who was making his NM State debut - were out-dueled by a 6-1 tally in their tilt with Jared Horwood and Nick Lagaev.

SINGLES
• Menard made a move to force a third set in his top-line tilt against Smith, but came up just short of doing so. The Aggies' first flight player fell by a 6-2, 7-5 tally.
• Shuffling their lineup around, the Aggies pushed Martin Simecek up to flight two where he was on the wrong end of a 6-0, 6-1 match with Malbasic.
• Visser took a pair of games against Hassey in their third-flight battle, but Arizona's lead grew to 3-0 with Hassey's 6-1, 6-1 win there.
• Like Menard on line one, Itay Feigin made a strong push for a third set that ultimately fell just short. NM State's freshman lost a 6-1, 6-4 matchup against Lagaev.
• Akkermans came out swinging against Middleton in the fifth-flight battle between the two. Unfortunately, it was all Middleton in the second set as Akkermans fell by a 6-3, 6-0 tally.
• After making his doubles debut earlier in the morning, Fe d'Ostiani slid into the Aggies' lineup as their flight six singles competitor. In his first collegiate one-on-one match, the Italian lost a 6-4, 6-0 matchup against Conner Olsen.

Match Two | #16 Arizona 4, NM State 0
DOUBLES

• In a play-to-clinch match, the Wildcats used wins on lines one and three to get an early jump on the Aggies.
• Menard and Visser were denied a chance at a 2-0 day when they lost a 6-1 decision to Gustaf Strom and Herman Hoeyeraal.
• In third-flight action, Fe d'Ostiani and Ford teamed up again and fell 6-1 in their matchup with Olsen and Smith.
• Akkermans and Clarke trailed Horwood and Lagaev by a score of 5-3 at the time Arizona clinched the doubles point.

SINGLES
• Again, Simecek lined up on line two. Facing Hoeyeraal, who is currently ranked 53rd in the ITA singles players rankings, Simecek won five total games in his 6-2, 6-3 loss.
• Fe d'Ostiani and Akkermans both made strong pushes to get to a third set in their respective singles matches. After getting shut out in his opening set, Fe d'Ostiani pushed Olsen to the limit in the second frame before falling 6-0, 7-5.
• Akkermans wound up on the wrong end of a 6-1, 7-6 decision against Horwood in sixth-flight play.

COMING UP NEXT
• NM State heads to Lubbock, Texas, for two more non-conference matches on Friday and Saturday. The Aggies' two-match swing starts Friday with a neutral-site showdown against Louisiana Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
