Box Score LUBBOCK, Texas - Gijs Akkermans picked up his first singles victory of the season, but that was the only team point the NM State men's tennis team came up with in a 6-1 non-conference setback at Texas Tech Friday at the McLeod Tennis Center.
NM State dropped to 2-5 on the season following its fifth-consecutive loss.
DOUBLES
• Texas Tech got right to work in doubles play as Isaac Arevalo and Piotr Pawlak collected a 6-0 shutout victory over NM State's line two pairing of Akkermans and Corey Clarke.
• NM State saw any chances of capturing the doubles point go by the wayside after Ryan Ford and Martin Simecek fell 6-2 on line three against Francisco Vittar and Olle Wallin.
• In top-flight action, Louis Menard and Jordy Visser continued their strong start to 2022 by doubling up Reed Collier and Franco Ribero by a 6-3 tally. That Aggie pair moved to 4-2 on the season thanks to its latest triumph.
SINGLES
• Trying to take down Ribero twice in one day, Visser instead suffered a 6-3, 6-0 setback to the Red Raiders' third-flight player in one-on-one action.
• In flight two, Simecek was out-dueled by a 6-0, 6-3 score in flight two action. NM State's line two competitor was lined up against Collier in his singles tilt.
• Line three was where the Red Raiders clinched the match. Clarke was edged 7-6 (4) in his first set against Wallin who proceeded to finish the job with a 6-1 triumph in the second set.
• Itay Feigin was inserted in flight five for NM State and he won seven games against Pawlak before ultimately falling by a 6-3, 6-4 score.
• Menard went toe-to-toe with Arevalo in top-line play, but suffered a narrow 6-4, 6-4 defeat.
• That left Akkermans as the last Aggie standing. After getting outplayed by a 6-1 score in his sixth-flight battle with Takeyasu Sekiguchu, Akkermans battled back. NM State's Dutch sophomore forced a decisive third set with a 6-4 win in the middle set. Once the third set started, Akkermans worked his way to a win by way of a 10-6 score.
COMING UP NEXT
• One final match awaits NM State in Lubbock, Texas, as the Aggies line up against Louisiana Saturday at the McLeod Tennis Center. First serve is set for noon.
