NM State Slips in 13-Inning Marathon

Aggies pitchers combined to match NM State's single-game record with 20 strikeouts

The Basics
Game Eleven
Score: Seattle U 13, NM State 12 (13 Innings)
Records: Seattle U (3-8); NM State (8-3)
Location: Las Cruces, N.M. (Presley Askew Field)

LAS CRUCES, N.M. –  It took thirteen innings to decide a winner in NM State's WAC opener against Seattle U. In the thirteenth inning, a long ball from the Redhawks catcher gave Seattle U the lead and they shut the door in the bottom half of the frame.

NM State took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning when Brandon Dieter scored on a bases-loaded balk. Ryan Grabosch plated a second run with a sacrifice fly, scoring Gunner Antillon.

Both teams plated a run in the second inning with NM State scoring on a Kevin Jimenez single to right-center, scoring Antillon. Seattle U got three runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead over the Aggies.

With a quick response, the Aggies plated two runs in the bottom half of the frame. With one away, Nolan Funke launched a home run to right-center to tie the game at four. After Tommy Tabak, Cal Villareal, and Dieter all reached safely, Antillon gave NM State the lead, drawing a bases-loaded walk.

Seattle once again hung three runs on the Aggies in the top of the fifth. For the second time in two innings, Funke went deep to cut into the deficit with a home run to left field. Funke became the first Aggie to homer twice in a game since Dieter did so at Tarleton on April 25, 2021.

With two away in the sixth inning, Preston Godfrey hit a three-run blast to right field – His first home run of the season. In the following inning, Antillon ripped a two-RBI single to right-center, scoring Tabak and Villareal.

When the eighth inning rolled around, the Redhawks struck for four more runs to tie the game at 11. In the bottom half of the eighth, Godfrey led off with a double down the left-field inning. After Kyle Westfall came in as a pinch-runner and advanced to third on a wild pitch, Edwin Martinez-Pagani once again gave NM State the lead with a groundout to shortstop.

Refusing to quit, the Redhawks tied the game at 12 in the top of the ninth inning on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the ninth, NM State got the game-winning run to third base before stranding the runner.

The two teams traded zeros for three innings in extra innings before the Redhawks finally struck in the thirteenth. The Redhawks right fielder launched a laser beam over the wall in right to take a 13-12 lead. Villareal got the Aggies going with a double down the left-field line and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. With the tying run 90 feet away, the Aggies closed the ballgame with a strikeout and a ground out to the first baseman.
