DAVIS, Calif. - A back-and-forth match saw NM State take two separate leads, but UC Davis battled back twice to earn a 4-3 win Friday afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The match was the second for both teams in the Golden State Invitational.
DOUBLES
• For the second-straight match, NM State fell behind after dropping the doubles point. Slotted on line two, Louis Menard and Jordy Visser couldn't come up with much momentum and dropped a 6-2 decision to Brett Brinkman and Andras Necz.
• UC Davis jumped out to a 1-0 lead after Martin Simecek and Luca Fe d'Ostiani were doubled up, 6-3, by Coleton Hootman and Mitchell Davis.
SINGLES
• The Aggies made their move in singles play. NM State's comeback bid started with Corey Clarke's 6-0, 6-3 victory over Necz in flight three action.
• Moments after Clarke's win tied the score at 1-1, Fe d'Ostiani handed NM State its first lead of the match. The Italian scored a 6-4, 6-3 win over Hootman to push the Aggies up 2-1.
• UC Davis knotted things up when Gijs Akkermans wound up on the wrong end of a 6-2, 7-5 decision against Davis.
• Menard handed NM State its final lead of the match with his win in top-flight action. NM State's senior defeated Andrei Volgin 6-2, 7-5 in line one play, giving the Aggies a 3-2 lead.
• Itay Feigin tried to clinch the match for NM State in his fourth-flight battle against Ryan Morgan. Instead, Ryan Morgan kept UC Davis' hopes for victory alive with a 6-2, 7-5 win.\
• That left things up to Simecek in flight two play. He forced a third set, but Ryan Torres played the role of hero for UC Davis by clinching the match with his 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 win.
