ST. GEORGE, Utah – Twelve unanswered runs doomed the NM State baseball team as they opened a conference series at Dixie State on Friday night. After taking a 2-0 lead, the Aggies fell by a score of 12-2 in the series opener.
In the top of the first inning, the Aggies jumped out to a two-run lead over Dixie State. The first three Aggies reached after singles from
Brandon Dieter and
Kevin Jimenez and a walk from
Gunner Antillon.
Preston Godfrey plated a run when he bounced into a fielder's choice, scoring Dieter. Antillon also came around to score on the play after a throwing error by the opposing shortstop.
The Trailblazers struck for five runs in the bottom half of the first inning and never looked back. In the inning, the Trailblazers drew four walks and managed to capitalize on the NM State miscues.
Dixie State added a run in the third, two in the fourth, and one more in the fifth to push their lead to 9-2 over the Aggies.
Cade Swenson and Lyle Hibbits combined to spin a pair of scoreless innings out of the NM State bullpen. Hibbits needed just six pitches to sit down the Trailblazers while Swenson sat down a Dixie State hitter in his frame.
In the bottom half of the eighth inning, Dixie State tacked on three more runs to put the mercy rule into effect. The Trailblazers capped off the 12-2 victory on Friday night with twelve unanswered runs.
