Humphrey, Makhethe, Steen Shine On Day One at Willie Williams Classic

Aggies record three first-place finishes to open 2022 outdoor season

RESULTS

Tucson, AZ - The NM State track & field program started the 2022 outdoor season with a strong showing on day one of the Willie Williams Classic, hosted by the University of Arizona. Phetisang Makhethe (hammer throw), Mariah Humphrey (javelin), and Terice Steen (400m hurdles) gave the Aggies three first-place finishers, while a number of other athletes posted top-10 finishes and recorded new personal bests.
 
Hammer Throw
Phetisang Makhethe picked up right where she left off at the end of the indoor season, taking home the gold with a mark of 61.70 meters. This was Makhethe's first time competing in the hammer throw as an Aggie.
The trio of Emily Hernandez (5th, 52.25m), Makiya Moore (6th, 51.55m), and Kaitlyn Ward (10th, 48.53m) made it four Aggies who posted top-ten finishes. Freshman Iysis Tellez-Briggs made her first appearance in the hammer throw, posting a mark of 41.06m.
 
Javelin
Mariah Humphrey posted her best finish and best placement, winning the javelin toss with a mark of 46.29m, a new personal best.

Shot Put
Rebecca Green set a new personal best, posting a mark of 14.47m to nab fourth place in the event. Kaitlyn Ward took tenth with a toss of 12.95m.
 
400m Hurdles
Terice Steen made it a third first-place finish for the Aggies Friday, taking home the 400m hurdle crown with a time of 1:01.16. Israel Swanson posted a fifth-place finish with a time of 1:04.54.
 
200m Dash
Jhana Downie added her name to the list of Aggies to record a new personal best, posting a time of 24.47 in the 200m dash and finishing sixth in the process.
 
1500m Run
Thulisile Amon took part in the 1500m for the first time since April 24, 2021, as a member of Monroe College, but didn't let that hold her back, posting a personal best time of 4:38.11 to take seventh in the event. Maggie Gibbs crossed the line in ninth, posting a time of 4:42.17 for a new personal best.
 
3000m Steeplechase
Thobile Amon took part in the steeplechase for the first time in her track & field career, posting a time of 11:16.42 in the event and taking third.  
 
The Aggies return to Roy P. Drachman Stadium for day two of the Willie Williams Classic Saturday, starting with the 400m relay race at approximately 12:05 MT. NM State will participate in the discus toss, triple jump, 4x100 relay, 100m hurdle, 400m dash, 800m run, 100m dash and 4x400 relay.
