RESULTS
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The NM State track & field program took their talents to San Diego for the Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State University and came away with a string of strong performances. Led by
Phetisang Makhethe and her victory in the hammer throw, the Aggies ended the weekend with a pair of first-place finishes, including multiple top-five marks and numerous personal records set.
Hammer Throw
With all other events scheduled at the SDSU Sports Complex, the hammer throw was the only event to take place at Triton Track & Field Stadium at UC San Diego Friday afternoon. For the second consecutive week, freshman
Phetisang Makhethe took the top prize in the hammer throw, recording a distance of 60.22 meters.
Emily Hernandez took the second spot on the leaderboard with a toss of 55.73m, a personal best and her best finish in any collegiate event.
Makiya Moore claimed fifth place with a mark of 50.40m, while
Kaitlyn Ward set a personal best with a toss of 49.69m to take sixth.
Javelin
Mariah Humphrey followed up her win at the Willie Williams Classic last week with another top-ten performance on Saturday, taking eighth place with a toss of 42.17m, Humphrey's second-longest throw of her career.
1500m Run
Thobile Amon was the only Aggie to participate in the event, taking third with a time of 4:28.00 while setting a new personal best. This was Amon's first time competing in the 1500m since joining the NM State track & field program while also tying for her best finish in the event.
Discus Throw
Rebecca Green (44.77m) recorded a new personal best, while Ward (41.40m) set her second new personal best of the weekend.
100m Hurdles
A pair of sophomores suited up for the event, with
Valissa Brown landing in fifth with a wind adjusted time of 13.85 (-0.5 m/s), while
Aliyah Logan managed an eighth-place finish with her wind-adjusted time of 14.36 (-0.5 m/s).
400m Dash
Jhana Downie set a new personal best in the 400m taking third place with a time of 54.77, eclipsing the mark she posted at the 2022 WAC Indoor Track & Field Championships (55.64) while also matching her previous best finish in the event.
100m Dash
Grace Pendarvis finished just outside of the top-10, placing 11
th with a time of 11.92.
Sierra Brewer competed in the event for the first time in her collegiate career, taking 12
th with a time of 12.09.
800m Run
Thulisile Amon set a new personal best with a time of 2:10.15, at the same time tying her best placement in the event.
400m Hurdles
In a tightly contested race,
Terice Steen finished in third-place with a time of 1:00.16, while
Israel Swanson captured eighth with a time of 1:03.01.
200m Dash
Grace Pendarvis recorded a ninth-place finish with a wind-assisted time of 24.01 (+2.9 m/s) while,
Sierra Brewer (24.69, +1.7 m/s) and Breanna Moss (25.98, +1.6 m/s) set new personal bests in the event.
5000m Run
A trio of Aggies found themselves in the top-five, headed by
Maggie Gibbs who took first place with a time of 16:51.84, crushing her previous best by over 40 seconds (17:35.24).
Emily Stutesman tied her best finish in the event with a third-place result, recording a time of 17:10.67.
Mia Regan captured her best finish in the 5000m, taking home fifth place with a time of 17:48.61 while also setting a personal best.
4x400 Relay
The quartet of Downie,
Asjah Wallace, Steen, and
Thulisile Amon combined to run a time of 3:42.27, good for second place.
UP NEXT
Following a pair of out-of-state meets, the Aggies return to the Land of Enchantment and enjoy an off week as they prepare for the New Mexico Spring Invite, hosted by the University of New Mexico. The one-day event will take place Thursday, April 7
th in Albuquerque.
