ABILENE, Texas - In another down-to-the-wire decision, the NM State women's tennis team suffered a 4-3 WAC loss at Abilene Christian Sunday at the Eager Tennis Pavilion.
With the loss, NM State dropped to 3-13 and 1-2 in WAC play on the year.
DOUBLES
• Line three was the only place where NM State picked up a win in doubles action. Miranda Bishard and Bella Nguyen captured a 6-2 triumph in their battle to answer a flight two win by Abilene Christian.
• Things went down to the wire in top-flight action, but Chloe Gavino and Lisa Zhu fell by the narrowest of margins in their 7-6 defeat at the hands of Allison Stewart and Sylvia Viljoen.
SINGLES
• Zhu made short work of Stewart once one-on-one play began. NM State's freshman pulled the Aggies even with the Wildcats thanks to her 6-4, 6-1 victory on line two.
• Abilene Christian retook the lead when Bishard fell by a 6-3, 6-2 tally in flight six action.
• NM State had its back agains the wall shortly thereafter. Gavi Kalaga forced a third set, but couldn't complete her comeback bid against Andrea Guerrero and fell 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 to put the Aggies at a 3-1 disadvantage.
• For the second-straight day, though, NM State battled back. Gavino started her team's comeback bid by picking up a 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 triumph over Maryjoe Crisologo in top-flight action.
• Nguyen recovered from a slow start and knotted the match at 3-3 by way of a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win on line five.
• That put all sights on Natsuki Nishimura's matchup with Viljoen on line three. Nishimura started out strong, but wound up dropping a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 tilt to give the match to Abilene Christian.
COMING UP NEXT
• NM State travels to the Pacific Northwest for two more WAC matches. The Aggies travel to Seattle U for showdowns with Dixie State (Friday, April 1) and Chicago State (Saturday, April 2).
