LAS CRUCES, N.M. –  A clean sweep of a Saturday twin-bill got the NM State baseball team back in the win column. With Pablo Cortes and Cade Swenson both making their first starts on the mound in the crimson and white, the Aggie offense provided plenty of run support.

With sixteen innings of baseball on Saturday, the Aggies decided to play lightning quick. From the first pitch of game one to the final out of game two, just 4:35 passed, including the 30-minute break between games.

Game One
Pablo Cortes got the nod for the Aggies in game one and did not let the moment get the best of him. From the jump, Cortes controlled the Panther lineup and dominated the opposing hitters. In his first start as an Aggie, Cortes tossed a complete-game gem, allowing just four hits along the way.

Just three batters into the bottom of the first, Kevin Jimenez launched his second home run of the year to put the Aggies up by two. Nolan Funke added an RBI double in the second inning to plate Ryan Grabosch and push the Aggie lead to three.

The scoring parade continued in the third inning when Logan Gallina put a three-run home run into orbit. After a flyout to the wall by Edwin Martinez-Pagani, Grabosch got in on the long-ball loving as he hit NM State's second homer of the inning – A solo shot to left-center.

In the fourth inning, NM State tacked on an insurance run to make the score 8-0. On the very next pitch following a Gunner Antillon triple, Jimenez ripped a double to left-center to score the run.

Cortes continued to dominate and finished the first game in just 1:30.

Game Two
Just as they did in game one, the Aggies got out to a hot start in the first inning when Preston Godfrey ripped an RBI single to right field, scoring Brandon Dieter. After the Godfrey knock, Gallina plated a two-run single to put NM State up by three.

In the third inning, Cal Villereal singled and plated Nolan Funke to put the Aggies up by four.

After Prairie View A&M got a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, NM State wasted no time responding with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame. The first three Aggie hitters – Gallina, Martinez-Pagani, and Antillon – all reached before the Panthers made a call to the bullpen. A fresh arm did not phase Funke as he roped a two-run single to right field. Later in the inning, Funke got into a rundown on a stolen base attempt long enough for Antillon to score from third base.

Making his first start of the season, Cade Swenson allowed just two runs over five innings before giving way to Brendon Rodriguez. Coming on in the sixth inning, Rodriguez took the ball the rest of the way for NM State, allowing just one hit over 4.0 innings.

Antillon led off the sixth inning with a triple before Jimenez drew a full-count walk. Godfrey lifted a towering fly ball to left field which scored Antillon from third and brought the red-hot Gallina to the plate. On an 0-2 pitch, Gallina hit his second home run of the day to center field, putting NM State up 10-2.

The Aggies tacked on three insurance runs in the eighth inning to push the score to 13-2. After Hunter Antillon and Kyle Westfall were both hit by a pitch, Dieter reached on an error by the first baseman, which scored a pair of runs. Quickly after Hunter Antillon scored, his brother, Gunner Antillon poked a double to score Jimenez from first.

In the ninth, Rodriguez got the Panthers to fly out to right, strikeout looking, and bounce into a game-ending ground ball to shortstop.

Quick Hits – Game One
  • Kevin Jimenez recorded three hits in the ballgame – The only Aggie to tally multiple hits.
  • Pablo Cortes threw the first complete game of the season for the Aggies and the first since May 8, 2021.
  • Cortes needed just 10 pitches to get through the first two innings of work.
  • NM State matched their single-game high from this season with three home runs.
  • Jimenez and Logan Gallina combined to drive in six of the eight runs for NM State in the ballgame.

Quick Hits – Game Two
  • After his second home run of the day, Logan Gallina now sits at four home runs on the season which leads NM State.
  • Gallina tallied seven total RBI in Saturday's double-dip.
  • Cade Swenson made his first start on the mound for the Aggies. Swenson had pitched one inning in relief against Oakland as his only other appearance for NM State.
  • Gunner Antillon, Preston Godfrey, Gallina, and Nolan Funke all recorded a multi-hit game.
  • Brendon Rodriguez notched a four inning save – His first save of the season.
