Zhu's Singles Win Gives NM State 4-3 Victory over Portland

Freshman's match-clinching win lifts Aggies to first win of 2022

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Tied 3-3 with Portland, NM State women's tennis team watched as freshman Lisa Zhu secured her team's first dual match victory of 2022 by posting a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win in flight two which lifted the Aggies to a 4-3 victory over the Pilots Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

DOUBLES
• Getting off to a strong start was of the utmost importance to NM State and that's what it did thanks to some strong play in tandem action. Miranda Bishard and Bella Nguyen set the tone down on line three by doubling up Angela Schuster and Aleks Dimitrijevic by a 6-3 tally.
• Portland battled back with a 6-2 victory in flight two action, but the Aggies' top-flight tandem of Chloe Gavino and Zhu answered the bell to give their team an early lead.
• Gavino and Zhu secured the doubles point for NM State by way of a 6-4 triumph over Iva Zelic and Neli Sunjic.

SINGLES
• Once one-on-one play got going, things went back and forth for the rest of the match. Portland pulled even after Rimona Rouf took down Nguyen by a 6-3, 6-1 score.
• NM State regained the lead off the racquet of Gavi Kalaga who eased by Marijia Elenova via a 6-1, 6-0 score.
• Bishard tried to pad the Aggies' lead down on line six, but her 6-3, 6-1 setback to Dimitrijevic helped the Pilots even things up at two.
• Natsuki Nishimura generated her first singles win as an Aggie to give her team the lead once again. Her 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Sunjic in flight three action handed NM State a 3-2 upper hand.
• Gavino tried to ice things for the Aggies in top-flight action by forcing a third set in her matchup against Zelic. Unfortunately, Gavino couldn't complete the comeback and fell 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 to leave it up to Zhu.
• NM State's freshman came through when it counted, claiming a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Sally Pethybridge on line two.

COMING UP NEXT
• NM State heads back to Las Cruces where it will play host for its first home dual match in nearly two full months. Friday morning at 11:00 a.m., the Aggies are set to host Pacific at the NM State Tennis Complex.
