BOULDER CITY, Nev, –After the second day at the WAC Men's Golf Championship, the NM State golf team sits in fourth place, 11 shots off the lead. While the Aggies have work to do on Sunday to repeat as team champions, a pair of Aggies remain in the hunt for the individual championship.
Starting the day in second place, the Aggies fell two spots on the second day of play. Briefly tied for the lead, NM State slid at the end of the afternoon and now sits 11 shots off the lead.
Aidan Thomas and
Garrison Smith both remain inside the top ten as individuals after the second round with Thomas leading the way. With Thomas shooting four-under-par over 36 holes, the Aggie sophomore sits in a tie for fifth-place. Smith sits just one shot behind Thomas and remains in a tie for ninth place.
Round Two
- Aidan Thomas birdied five consecutive holes on the front nine for the most impressive stretch of golf on Saturday. Thomas shot a 69 (-3) to pace NM State in the second round.
- Garrison Smith also finished under par, shooting a 71 (-1) on Saturday. Smith finished the front nine at two-under-par before playing even on the back half of the course.
- After a rough triple-bogey to start the day, Cole Grossl shot two-under-par over the remaining 17 holes. Highlighted by an eagle on the 16th hole, Grossl finished the day at 73 (+1).
- Alvaro Morales posted the final score of the day for the Aggies as he sprinkled four birdies in throughout his round. Morales finished the day shooting 74 (+2).
- As a team, the Aggies finished one-under-par in the second round – Two shots better than their opening round.
- The Aggies sit five shots out of third place, which is currently held by Grand Canyon.
- Sam Houston leads the Aggies by 11 shots going into the final day.
