LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The NM State Track & Field Team is back in action this week as they head to Albuquerque to compete in the New Mexico Spring Invite. The Aggies are coming off a week in which they had no meet. They competed two weekends ago at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego, which saw the Aggies place fourth overall as a team just behind eighth-ranked Oregon, San Diego State, and California.
Several Aggies had top-five performances in San Diego. Three Aggies placed in the top five for the hammer throw: Phetisang Makhethe (60.22m), Emily Hernandez (55.73m), and Makiya Moore (50.40m). Makhethe took the top overall spot with her mark. This was the third time this season that Makhethe finished in first place and the seventh time she finished in the top five in as many meets. She currently holds the 30th best mark (61.72m) in the nation for her performance at the Willie Williams Classic in Tucson (3/18).
Unfortunately, Makhethe won't be competing this weekend as there is no scheduled hammer throw for the meet, but fans can catch Green, Moore, and Ward as they are all set to complete in the discuss throw and shot put which are set to begin at 2:00p .m.
Another Aggie that took the top spot on the podium in San Diego was sophomore distance runner Maggie Gibbs. This would be the second time that Gibbs finished in first place in her young career, and she did it with a personal best time of 16:51.84 in the 5000m. The last time she finished in first was during the 2020 WAC Indoor Track & Field Championships. She recorded a 12:15.76 in the distance medley relay alongside Richelle Sandin, Terice Steen and Anisa Burciaga.
Other Aggies that finished in the top five include Emily Stuntman and Mia Regan in the 5000m, Terice Steen in the 400m hurdles, Thulisile Amon in the 800m, Jahna Downie in the 400m dash and Valissa Brown in the 100m hurdles.
This weeks action is set to begin on Thursday starting with the first event (javelin) starting at 12:30 p.m. and the last event (4x400 relay) starting at 5:55 p.m.
