Seattle, WA – Day one of the 2022 WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships is finished, and it was an eventful one for the NM State track & field program.
Maggie Gibbs set the school record in the 10,000m, freshman phenom
Phethisang Makhethe became the first NM State student-athlete to record a first-place finish at this years Championships, while
Makiya Moore,
Maggie Gibbs, and
Mariah Humphrey earned points for their performances.
Grace Pendarvis,
Terice Steen, and
Israel Swanson qualified and advanced to their respective finals.
Hammer Throw
Phethisang Makhethe continued her dominant streak in the hammer throw, taking first place with a toss of 62.86 meters and scoring ten points for the Aggies.
Makiya Moore finished in fourth place with a throw of 51.53m, adding five points to the NM State total.
Javelin
Mariah Humphrey secured an eighth-place finish with a toss of 40.59m, scoring another tally got the Crimson & White.
200m Dash – Prelims
Pendarvis advanced to Saturday's 200m finals after winning her heat and finishing sixth overall with a wind-adjusted time of 25.13 (+0.7 m/s).
400m Hurdles – Prelims
Terice Steen cemented her spot in the finals after winning her heat with a time of 1:01.90, good for second overall, joined by
Israel Swanson who finished fifth overall with a time of 1:03.91.
10,000m
Maggie Gibbs shattered her personal best by over three minutes while also eclipsing the school record by over 30 seconds, finishing with a time of 34:13.56.
