ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The woes continued for the NM State baseball team on Tuesday afternoon as it fell to in-state rival New Mexico for the fourth time this season. In the series finale, the Aggies never managed to take the lead, eventually falling by a score of 12-4 in the Duke City.
Trailing 4-0 after two innings, the Aggies got their first hit in the form of an RBI triple from
Brandon Dieter. The three-bagger marked the 16th consecutive game in which Dieter has reached base – The longest streak of any Aggie this season.
Logan Gallina lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Dieter and bring NM State back within two. In the fourth inning, NM State struck for another run and got back within a run. This time,
Kevin Jimenez tripled to left field, scoring Gallina from first base.
From there, it was all Lobos. New Mexico answered with two runs in the fifth before pouring it on for six runs in the seventh inning.
Trailing 12-3, the Aggies looked to be piecing together a rally in the eighth inning when
Edwin Martinez-Pagani and
Tommy Tabak led off the inning with back-to-back base hits.
Cal Villareal pushed across Martinez-Pagani with a sacrifice fly but that was all the offense could muster. The Aggies were retired in order in the ninth inning to close out the ballgame.
