PAWLEY'S ISLAND, S.C. – NM State women's golf wrapped up their first fall tournament on Wednesday afternoon, notching a fifth-place finish. In the field of 20 teams, the Aggies remained near the top throughout the duration of the Golfweek Fall Challenge.
Alison Gastelum picked up right where she left off in 2021-22, finishing third in Pawley's Island. The junior from Chihuahua, Mexico finished third individually, shooting seven strokes under par for the tournament. In her final round, Gastelum shot a 70 (-1) with a trio of birdies.
As a true freshman,
Emma Bunch showed that the sky is the limit in her first collegiate tournament. Bunch finished in a tie for eighth place, shooting three-under. In the final two days of play, Bunch fired off 12 birdies. Throughout the tournament, Bunch sank 15 birdies, the third-highest total of any player in the field.
The other true freshman for the Aggies,
Kaylee Chen, knocked in five birdies in the final round of her first collegiate tournament. At the Golfweek Fall Challenge, Chen tied for 37th individually, shooting eight-over (221).
Round Three Notes
- Emma Bunch's 15 birdies were the third-highest total of any player in the 20-team field.
- NM State had an average score of 3.03 on Par 3's – The fourth-lowest among teams in Pawley's Island.
- As a team, the Aggies carded 50 birdies this week – Third best in the field.
- Alison Gastelum (2.80) and Emma Bunch (2.93) both averaged under-par on Par 3 holes throughout the tournament.
- Bunch also averaged under par (3.85) on Par 4 holes. Gastelum finished with an average of exactly 4.00 on Par 4's.
- Valentina Origel proved to be successful on Par 5's throughout the week, averaging 4.75 strokes. Gastelum once again found herself below par, shooting 4.67 on Par 5's.
- NM State's next tournament will once again be hosted by Golfweek. The Aggies will compete in the Golfweek Red Sky Classic from September 26-28.
